Tivo started the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) revolution off back in 1999.

As with many great inventions, the first generation boxes were a bit ahead of their time with a slow uptake in the UK, meanwhile Tivo became a household name in the USA.

People often refer to a vacuum cleaner as a “hoover”, when in-fact “Hoover” is the brand, well that’s how people refer to the art of recording their digital tv programmes in the USA.        e.g. “ I will tivo that movie “.

The satellite & cable companies in the UK recognised a good thing when they saw it and produced their own boxes often with poor imitations of Tivo’s innovated features. Even now, Tivo imitators like Sky+ and Virgin’s V+ have never quite ticked all the boxes and failed to capture Tivo’s appeal and ease of use interface!
